sustaining humanity

Most people would agree that humanity should be able to continue to live on the Earth for as long as the Earth is capable of providing for us, and that therefore we have a responsibility and, if there is such a thing as a right, we have a right to act in a way that will allow the Earth to provide for the people of the future, as it does for us.

Most people would agree that we also have a moral responsibility to ensure that the people of the future have at least the same level of opportunity that we do. Many people also believe that we should work towards creating a future society that provides an even better life for the people of the future; there are many people in history who have followed these ideals.

The ideal that the Earth should be able to provide for people in the future as it does for us now is an ideal of continuity — of sustainability.
